'''Template:American Factfinder''' generates external links to [[2000 United States Census|U.S. Census 2000]] demographic data of cities, towns, counties, and states. Its primary purpose is to simplify the creation of URL links in references for population in articles. It is meant to be used both to generate stand-alone links and as a backend for [[Template:Cite American Factfinder]] for article references.

Generates a link to a PDF from http://censtats.census.gov/data/ that includes
*General population totals, age, gender, race, and number of households.
*Social characteristics, such as ethnicity, education, and marital status.
*Economic data, such as median income, poverty levels, and employment.
*Housing data, including number and type of housing units as well as home values.

Note: Template is only for the 50 U.S. states, the [[District of Columbia]] and [[Puerto Rico]]. It will not generate information for the other U.S. territories.

===Usage===
'''For links''': <nowiki>{{</nowiki>American Factfinder|''state''|''type''|''fips''|''source=age''<nowiki>}}</nowiki><br>
'''For references''': <nowiki>{{</nowiki>Cite American Factfinder|''state''|''type''|''id''|''name=''|''accessdate=''|''source=age''<nowiki>}}</nowiki>
* <code>state</code>: The two digit postal abbreviation for the state. Use '''US''' for United States, '''DC''' for District of Columbia and '''PR''' for Puerto Rico.

* <code>type</code>: Locality/Geographic Location for which data is needed. See [[#Locality Terms|Locality Terms]] below.

* <code>id</code>: The [[Federal Information Processing Standards|FIPS code]] for the location. For most areas, this is a 4 or 5 digit number preceded by the 2 digit state number. Exemptions are listed below. See [[#Finding FIPS codes|Finding FIPS Codes]] for more.
**States: 2 digit state number.
**Counties: 5 digits, state number + county number
**County subdivisions: 10 digits. state number + county number + location number.
**''Note: Some areas have multiple FIPS Codes. Be sure to use the FIPS code that corresponds to the particular geographic type you have selected, e.g. county, city, township, etc.''
