Sigridsdotter is a larp about a contemporary matriarchy. A story about a group of ordinary people and their lives, desires and longing in a world not entirely unlike our own.

Themes

Sigridsdotter focuses on exploring gender roles through a reversal of the power structures between the two genders. Most defining traits of the two classic genders have been kept, but their values reversed. As an example women are considered more reliable, since they handle complex emotional situations on a regular basis due to their natural cycle, while men are inexperienced and feel unsophisticated violent emotions that make them unsuitable for leadership. A lot of the play centres on the effects of the matriarchal culture on family life, teenage culture and sexuality.

Setting

The setting is similar to the contemporary world, with focus put on referencing strong and competent female leaders and idols from real life and only including men for their looks or sex appeal. Men are not emancipated and must have a female guardian to represent them in legal matters.

Story summary

The larp takes place around Svennbalen, a sort of debutante ball, where the young boys are formally introduced to the girls who will then choose a suitable partner. It is an old ceremony that is kept out of tradition and heavily modernized. Still, it is an important moment in young people's lives and many marriages begin there. The larp ends once the young ladies have made a choice of which boy they wish to court, if any.
